Widget positioning

The Ultrathink Quick Capture widget is designed to stay accessible while you work. You can move it anywhere on your screen, switch between normal and expanded modes, and control whether it floats above other windows. This page covers all the ways you can customise the widget's position and behaviour.

Always-on-top mode

By default, the widget stays above all other windows on your screen. This means you can always see it and interact with it, regardless of which application is in the foreground.

How always-on-top works

  • The widget renders on a layer above standard application windows
  • It remains visible even when you click on other apps, switch desktops, or go full-screen in another application
  • You can still drag other windows over the widget area if needed, but the widget will remain on top when you release

Toggling always-on-top

If you prefer the widget to behave like a normal window (one that can be covered by other applications), you can turn off always-on-top mode:

  1. Click the gear icon in the widget title bar
  2. Find the Always on top toggle
  3. Switch it off

When always-on-top is disabled, the widget behaves like any other window. It moves behind other applications when you click away from it and comes to the front when you click on it or use the tray icon.

Tip: Even with always-on-top disabled, you can quickly bring the widget to the foreground by clicking the tray icon (Windows) or menu bar icon (Mac).

Normal vs expanded modes

The widget has two display modes, each suited to different tasks.

Normal mode

PropertyValue
Dimensions140 x 160 pixels
Best forQuick notes, file drops
Editor featuresPlain text input, save button

Normal mode is the default when you first open the widget. It provides a small, unobtrusive window with a text field for typing quick notes. This mode is ideal when you want to jot down a thought or drop a file without taking up much screen space.

Expanded mode

PropertyValue
Dimensions380 x 480 pixels
Best forLonger notes, rich text editing
Editor featuresTipTap rich text editor with formatting toolbar

Expanded mode gives you more room to write and access to the full rich text editor. Use this mode when you need formatting options such as bold, italic, lists, code blocks, or links.

Switching between modes

You can switch between normal and expanded mode by clicking the expand/collapse button in the widget title bar. The widget remembers your last-used mode and restores it the next time you open the window.

Moving the widget

You can drag the widget to any position on your screen:

  1. Click and hold the title bar of the widget
  2. Drag it to your preferred location
  3. Release to drop it in place

The widget remembers its position between sessions. When you close and reopen it, it returns to the last place you put it.

Multi-monitor support

If you use multiple monitors, you can place the widget on any screen:

  • Drag the widget across monitor boundaries as you would any other window
  • The widget stores the monitor and position, so it returns to the correct screen on restart
  • If you disconnect a monitor where the widget was positioned, it moves to your primary display automatically

System tray behaviour

The system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac) provides quick access to the widget without it taking up space on your desktop.

Windows tray icon

The Ultrathink icon sits in the system tray at the bottom-right of the taskbar:

  • Single-click the tray icon to show or hide the widget
  • Right-click the tray icon to open the context menu

If the tray icon is not visible, click the up arrow next to the tray to expand the overflow area. You can drag the Ultrathink icon out of the overflow area to keep it permanently visible.

Mac menu bar icon

On Mac, the Ultrathink icon appears in the menu bar at the top of the screen:

  • Click the menu bar icon to show or hide the widget
  • The icon provides the same context menu options as Windows

Context menu options

Right-clicking (Windows) or clicking (Mac) the tray icon reveals these options:

Show and hide behaviour

There are several ways to show and hide the widget:

  • Tray icon: Click the system tray icon (Windows) or menu bar icon (Mac)
  • Title bar close button: Clicking the close button hides the widget to the tray rather than quitting the application
  • Keyboard shortcut: Use the global shortcut if one is available in settings

Minimise behaviour

When you minimise the widget (using the minimise button or the system shortcut), it behaves differently from a standard application:

  • The widget does not appear in the taskbar (Windows) or Dock (Mac) when minimised
  • Instead, it collapses to the system tray or menu bar
  • This keeps your taskbar and Dock clean while the widget remains instantly accessible

To restore the widget after minimising, click the tray icon or menu bar icon.

Positioning tips

Here are some practical suggestions for where to place the widget:

  • Top-right corner: Keeps the widget visible without covering navigation elements in most applications. Works well with normal mode.
  • Bottom-right corner: Stays out of the way for most workflows while remaining accessible. Avoids overlap with browser tabs and toolbars.
  • Second monitor: If you have a multi-monitor setup, placing the widget on your secondary screen gives you dedicated capture space without covering your primary workspace.
  • Near your browser: Position the widget next to your browser window for a seamless capture workflow when researching or reading.

Restoring default position

If the widget ends up in an awkward position (for example, partially off-screen or on a disconnected monitor), you can reset it:

  1. Right-click the tray icon (Windows) or click the menu bar icon (Mac)
  2. Select Settings
  3. Click Reset position
  4. The widget moves to the centre of your primary display

If the settings option is not accessible, you can quit and restart the widget. On restart, if the stored position is off-screen, the widget automatically repositions to a visible area.
