Enabling the widget
The Ultrathink Quick Capture widget is a lightweight desktop application that sits on top of your other windows. It lets you capture notes, files, screenshots, and voice memos without switching away from what you are working on. The widget is available for both Windows and Mac.
What you will need
Before you begin, make sure you have the following:
- An Ultrathink account with a verified email address
- A device key generated from the web app (see below)
- Windows 10 or later, or macOS 12 (Monterey) or later
Installing on Windows
- Go to the GitHub Releases page
- Download the latest
UltraThink-Setup-x.x.x.exefile - Run the installer and follow the on-screen prompts
- Once installation completes, the widget starts automatically
- The Ultrathink icon appears in your system tray (bottom-right corner of the taskbar)
Note: Windows Defender or your antivirus software may show a warning because the installer is not yet code-signed through the Microsoft Store. Click More info and then Run anyway to proceed.
Windows system requirements
| Requirement | Minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 (64-bit) |
| RAM | 4 GB |
| Disk space | 200 MB |
| Display | 1280x720 or higher |
Installing on Mac
- Go to the GitHub Releases page
- Download the latest
UltraThink-x.x.x-universal.dmgfile - Open the DMG and drag the Ultrathink icon into your Applications folder
- Open Ultrathink from the Applications folder or Spotlight
- When prompted, allow accessibility permissions so the widget can stay on top of other windows
The Mac version ships as a universal binary, which means it runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) processors. There is no need to choose a separate download for your chip.
Mac permissions
macOS requires you to grant specific permissions before some features work:
| Permission | Required for | Where to grant |
|---|---|---|
| Accessibility | Always-on-top behaviour | System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility |
| Screen Recording | Screenshot capture | System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen Recording |
| Microphone | Audio recording | System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone |
After granting any permission, you may need to restart the widget for the change to take effect.
Setting up your device key
The widget authenticates with your Ultrathink account using a device key. This is a long-lived token that keeps you connected without requiring you to log in each time you use the widget.
Generating a device key
- Open the Ultrathink web app at app.ultrathink.io
- Go to Settings from the left-hand menu
- Select the Device Keys tab
- Click Create new key
- Give the key a descriptive name (for example, "Desktop widget, work laptop")
- Copy the generated key
You can create multiple device keys for different devices and revoke any key at any time from the same settings page.
Entering the key in the widget
- Click the gear icon in the widget title bar
- Paste your device key into the Device Key field
- Click Save
The widget connects to your account and is ready to use. All captures you make through the widget appear in your Ultrathink knowledge base alongside entries from other platforms.
System tray behaviour
After installation, the widget runs in the background and is accessible from the system tray:
- Windows: The Ultrathink icon appears in the system tray area at the bottom-right of your taskbar. If the icon is hidden, click the up arrow to expand the tray and find it.
- Mac: The Ultrathink icon appears in the menu bar at the top of your screen.
Right-clicking (Windows) or clicking (Mac) the tray icon gives you these options:
- Show/Hide Widget: Toggle the widget window on or off
- Settings: Open the settings panel
- Quit: Close the widget entirely
The widget launches automatically when you start your computer. You can disable this in the widget settings if you prefer to start it manually.
Auto-updates
The widget checks for updates automatically when it starts and periodically while running. Updates are delivered through GitHub Releases.
When an update is available:
- A notification appears in the widget informing you a new version is ready
- Click the notification to download the update
- The widget downloads the update in the background
- Once the download completes, the widget restarts and applies the new version
You do not need to visit the GitHub Releases page again after the initial installation. All subsequent updates are handled through this built-in mechanism.
Verifying the installation
After completing setup, confirm everything is working:
- Click the widget window or use the tray icon to show it
- Type a short test note in the text field
- Press Enter or click Save
- Open the Ultrathink web app and check that the entry appears in your feed
If the entry appears in your knowledge base, the widget is properly connected and ready to use.
Troubleshooting
Widget does not start on Windows
- Check that Windows Defender has not blocked the application

- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security and check whether macOS is blocking the app
