Installing the extension
The Ultrathink browser extension is the fastest way to capture web content. It lets you save articles, AI conversations, screenshots, and selected text directly to your knowledge base with a single click. This guide covers installation on Chrome and Edge, pinning the extension to your toolbar, and connecting it to your account with a device key.
Supported browsers
The extension works with Chromium-based browsers:
| Browser | Supported | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | Yes | Version 127 or later recommended for screenshot capture |
| Edge | Yes | Installs from the Chrome Web Store |
| Brave | Yes | Enable extension support in settings first |
| Firefox | No | Not currently supported |
| Safari | No | Not currently supported |
Installing from the Chrome Web Store
This is the recommended installation method for most users.
- Open the Chrome Web Store in your browser
- Search for Ultrathink
- Click the Ultrathink extension in the results
- Click Add to Chrome
- In the confirmation dialog, click Add extension
The extension installs in a few seconds. You will see a brief confirmation message and the Ultrathink icon appears in your extensions area.
Pinning the extension to your toolbar
By default, newly installed extensions may be hidden behind the puzzle piece icon in your toolbar. Pinning the extension gives you one-click access.
- Click the puzzle piece icon (Extensions) in your browser toolbar
- Find Ultrathink in the list
- Click the pin icon next to it
The Ultrathink icon now appears permanently in your toolbar, making it easy to capture content at any time.
Installing on Edge
Edge uses the Chrome Web Store for extensions. The process is almost identical:
- Open the Chrome Web Store in Edge
- If prompted, click Allow extensions from other stores at the top of the page
- Search for Ultrathink and click Add to Chrome
- Confirm by clicking Add extension
- Pin the extension to your toolbar using the same steps as above
Developer installation
If you are testing a development build or need to install the extension from source, you can load it manually.
- Download or clone the extension source folder to your computer
- Open your browser and go to
chrome://extensions - Enable Developer mode using the toggle in the top right corner
- Click Load unpacked
- Select the
ultrathink-extensionfolder on your computer - The extension appears in your extensions list
Note: Developer installations do not auto-update. You will need to click the refresh icon on the extension card in
chrome://extensionsafter pulling new changes.
Connecting the extension to your account
The extension uses a device key for authentication instead of a username and password. This means you only need to set it up once, and it stays connected across browser sessions.
Getting your device key
You create device keys in the Ultrathink web app:
- Log in to tryultrathink.com
- Go to Settings then Device Keys
- Click Create New Key
- Give the key a descriptive name (for example, "Work laptop Chrome" or "Home desktop Edge")
- Copy the generated key to your clipboard
Tip: Name your keys after the device and browser they are used on. This makes it easy to identify and revoke keys later if you switch devices.
Entering your device key
Once you have your key copied, configure the extension:
- Click the Ultrathink extension icon in your toolbar
- Click the gear icon (Options)
- Paste your device key into the Device Key field
- Click Save
The extension validates the key and confirms the connection. Your key is stored securely in Chrome's local storage and syncs across your Chrome profile, so you will not need to enter it again on the same profile.
Managing device keys
You can create as many device keys as you need. Each key can be independently revoked without affecting your other devices.
| Action | Where to do it |
|---|---|
| Create a new key | Settings then Device Keys then Create New Key |
| View active keys | Settings then Device Keys |
| Revoke a key | Click the delete icon next to the key in Settings |
If you revoke a key, the extension on that device stops working until you enter a new key.
Verifying the installation
After installing and connecting, verify that everything is working:
- Navigate to any web page
- Click the Ultrathink extension icon in your toolbar
- The capture popup should appear, showing:
- The page title (auto-extracted)
- The detected content type
- A notes field for your thoughts
If the popup appears and shows the page information, your extension is set up and ready to use.
Customising keyboard shortcuts
The extension comes with default keyboard shortcuts:
| Action | Windows and Linux | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Open capture popup | Ctrl+Shift+4 | Cmd+Shift+4 |
| Screenshot capture | Ctrl+Shift+5 | Cmd+Shift+5 |
To change these shortcuts:
- Go to
chrome://extensions/shortcutsin your browser - Find Ultrathink in the list
- Click the pencil icon next to the shortcut you want to change
- Press your preferred key combination
- The new shortcut is saved automatically
Extension permissions
The extension requests a minimal set of permissions to function:
| Permission | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
activeTab | Read the content of the page you are currently viewing when you capture it |
tabs | Access tab URLs for bulk tab capture |
scripting | Inject content scripts to extract text and metadata from pages |
storage | Store your device key locally |
The extension only accesses pages when you explicitly choose to capture them. There is no background tracking or data collection.
Troubleshooting
