Capturing pages, selections and screenshots
With the extension connected, saving anything from the web takes one shortcut. This page covers the save popup, selections, screenshots, saving every tab at once, and what the extension picks up from each kind of page.
If you have not set the extension up yet, start with Browser extension: install and connect.
Save the page you are on
- Press Ctrl+Shift+4 (Cmd+Shift+4 on a Mac), or click the Ultrathink icon in the toolbar.
- The popup opens. It shows the page title and address, a type list and a notes box.
- If you want, type a note. Your note is kept separate from the page content, so you can always tell your words from the page’s.
- Stop typing. After three seconds the popup saves the page and closes.
There is no Save button. The popup saves itself in three ways:
- The countdown. “Auto-saving in 3 seconds…” counts down as soon as the popup opens. Clicking into the notes box, typing, changing the type or ticking All tabs starts the countdown again from three.
- Closing the popup. Click anywhere outside it or press Esc, and it saves straight away with whatever you have typed.
- Saved! appears briefly when the save has gone through.
Because closing also saves, there is no way to cancel a save from the popup. If you saved something by mistake, delete the entry in the web app.
Choose the type
The extension sets the type for you from the page address. You can change it in the type list before the popup saves.
| Page | Type it picks |
|---|---|
| claude.ai | Claude |
| chatgpt.com or chat.openai.com | ChatGPT |
| perplexity.ai | Perplexity |
| Outlook on the web (outlook.office.com, outlook.office365.com, outlook.live.com mail) | Outlook |
| An address ending in .pdf | |
| An address ending in .md | Markdown |
| SharePoint and OneDrive documents | MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint or MS OneNote, from the link |
| notion.so and notion.site | Notion |
| YouTube and Vimeo | Video |
| LinkedIn people and company pages, X profiles, GitHub profiles and repositories | Profile |
| Anything else | Link |
The full list in the popup is: Link, Audio, ChatGPT, Claude, File, Idea, Image, Long Note, Markdown, MS Excel, MS OneNote, MS PowerPoint, MS Word, Notion, Outlook, Paragraph, PDF, Perplexity, Profile, Screenshot, Snippet and Video. Entry types explains each one.
What gets saved from a page
For most pages the extension saves:
- the page title and address;
- the description, author and published date, when the page provides them;
- the page’s preview image;
- an estimated reading time;
- the name of the tab group the page was in, if you use tab groups;
- your notes.
Some types get more:
| Type | Extra content saved |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity | The whole conversation. See Capturing AI conversations |
| Outlook | The body of the email you have open, its subject as the title, and a link back to the email |
| Notion | A picture of the part of the page you can see, which the AI reads to summarise the page |
| Profile | The person’s or company’s name, title, company, bio and photo, as far as the page shows them |
After the save, the AI writes a title and summary and adds topics and people. How the AI files your entries explains what happens next.
Save selected text
- Highlight some text on the page.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+4 (Cmd+Shift+4).
- The popup shows your selection and sets the type to Snippet.
- Add a note if you like, then let it save.
The entry keeps the selected text and the page address, so you can always get back to where the quote came from.
Take a screenshot
- Press Ctrl+Shift+5 (Cmd+Shift+5).
- The page dims and the pointer becomes a crosshair.
- Drag over the area you want. Or click once without dragging to capture everything you can see in the tab.
- The popup opens with the type set to Screenshot. Add a note if you want, and it saves as usual.
Press Esc while the page is dimmed to cancel.
The extension captures what is visible in the browser tab. To capture something outside the browser, such as another app or your whole screen, use the desktop app.
The AI describes each screenshot and reads the text in it, so you can find it again later by what it shows.
Save every tab in the window
- Open the popup on any tab.
- Tick All tabs (N). N is the number of tabs in the current window.
- The type list and notes box switch off, and the preview says how many tabs will be saved.
- Let the countdown finish, or close the popup.
Each tab becomes its own entry, with its type set from its address. Tabs saved together are linked to each other, and each keeps the name of its tab group. This is handy at the end of a research session, before you close everything.
If a save fails
If a save does not go through, the extension keeps it and shows a red ! on its icon. Open the popup to see what went wrong, then click Retry or Dismiss. Browser extension: install and connect has the details.
Pages that cannot be saved
- Browser pages, such as
chrome://andedge://pages, the extensions page and the web store. - Some pages block screenshots or reading their content. Saving still keeps the title and address.
Tips
- Write the note while the page is in front of you. A line on why you saved it is what helps most when you search later.
- Select the one paragraph that matters rather than saving the whole page, when that is all you need.
- Use All tabs before closing a window full of research.
- Check the type when the popup opens. A wrong type means the wrong kind of summary.
