Browser extension: install and connect
The browser extension is the quickest way to save what you find on the web. One shortcut saves the page you are on, the text you have selected, an area of the screen or a whole AI conversation. This page covers installing it, connecting it to your account and keeping it up to date.
What you need
- An Ultrathink account with a verified email address. See Creating your account.
- Chrome, Edge, Brave or another browser built on Chromium. Firefox and Safari are not supported.
- A device key for this browser. See Connect an app with a device key.
Install the extension
There are two ways to get it. Both are in the web app under Settings > Downloads, in the Browser extension group.
| Option | What it is | Updates |
|---|---|---|
| Direct download | A ZIP file you install by hand | Always the latest version. Download it again to update |
| Chrome Web Store | The store listing | Updates itself, but can lag behind while the store approves each version |
If you want the newest features first, use the ZIP.
Install from the ZIP
- In the web app, go to Settings > Downloads and click the download button next to Direct download.
- Unzip the file to a folder you will keep. The browser loads the extension from that folder, so do not delete it.
- Open your browser’s extensions page:
chrome://extensionsin Chrome or Brave,edge://extensionsin Edge. - Switch on Developer mode.
- Click Load unpacked and choose the unzipped folder.
- Ultrathink appears in your list of extensions.
Install from the Chrome Web Store
- In Settings > Downloads, click the button next to Chrome Web Store.
- Click Add to Chrome (or Get in Edge).
- In Edge, switch on Allow extensions from other stores on
edge://extensionsfirst if Edge asks.
Pin it to the toolbar
Click the jigsaw icon in the browser toolbar and click the pin next to Ultrathink. The Ultrathink icon then sits next to the address bar, ready to click.
Connect it to your account
The extension uses a device key instead of a username and password. You make the key in the web app and paste it into the extension once.
- In the web app, go to Settings > Device keys, type a name such as “Work laptop Chrome” in Device name and click Create key.
- Copy the key straight away. It is shown only once. Connect an app with a device key has the full steps.
- Right-click the Ultrathink icon in the toolbar and choose Options. You can also open your extensions page, click Details on Ultrathink and then Extension options.
- Under Connect to webapp, paste the key into Device Key and click Save.
- A message confirms the key is saved, then the page says it is connected.
The extension keeps the key in this browser’s own storage for extensions. It is not copied to other browsers or other computers, so each browser you use needs its own key.
The options page saves whatever you paste. It does not check the key with Ultrathink. If the key is wrong or has been revoked, you find out on your first save: see If a save fails below.
Check it works
- Open any web page.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+4 (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+4 (Mac), or click the Ultrathink icon.
- The popup opens and counts down: “Auto-saving in 3 seconds…”.
- Leave it. It saves, says “Saved!” and closes.
- Open the web app and go to All items. The page is at the top, and the AI starts filing it within a few seconds.
Capturing pages, selections and screenshots explains everything the popup can do.
Keyboard shortcuts
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ctrl+Shift+4 (Cmd+Shift+4 on Mac) | Opens the save popup for this page, or for the text you have selected |
| Ctrl+Shift+5 (Cmd+Shift+5 on Mac) | Starts a screenshot: drag over the area you want |
To change them, open the extension’s options page and click Customise under Keyboard shortcuts. That opens the browser’s own shortcuts page (chrome://extensions/shortcuts), which is the only place shortcuts can be changed. If another extension already uses one of these keys, change one of them there.
The options page
The options page has three parts.
| Part | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Connect to webapp | The Device Key field and its Save button |
| General | Enable debug logging, which writes extra detail to the browser console. Leave it off unless you are tracking down a problem |
| Keyboard shortcuts | The two shortcuts and the Customise button |
There is no settings button inside the popup itself. The options page is always reached from the right-click menu or the extensions page.
If a save fails
A save can fail if you are offline, the key is wrong or revoked, or Ultrathink cannot be reached. The extension does not lose the save:
- It keeps the failed save, including your notes, even if you close the browser.
- The Ultrathink icon shows a red !.
- The next time you open the popup, a banner says what failed and why, with Retry and Dismiss. The countdown waits while the banner is showing, so the popup does not close before you can act. Closing the popup still saves the page you are on.
Click Retry to send the failed saves again. Click Dismiss to drop them.
If every save fails with a key error, make a new key in Settings > Device keys and paste it into the options page. A key cannot be shown a second time, so copying the old one again is not possible.
Updating the extension
- Chrome Web Store copy: the browser updates it for you.
- ZIP copy: download the ZIP again from Settings > Downloads, unzip it over the old folder, then click the reload arrow on the Ultrathink card on your extensions page. Your device key stays in place.
What the extension can see
The extension asks for permission to read pages and tabs because it needs them to save what you ask for. It reads a page only when you save it: the page details, any selected text, the conversation on an AI chat page, or the email you have open in Outlook on the web. It does not run on pages in the background.
| Permission | Why it needs it |
|---|---|
| Read and change data on websites | To read the page, selection or conversation you are saving |
| Tabs and tab groups | To save every tab in the window, and to note which tab group a page was in |
| Storage | To keep your device key and any failed saves |
Browser pages such as chrome:// pages, the extensions page and the web store cannot be saved. Browsers do not let extensions read them.
Common problems
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| The shortcut does nothing | Check the shortcut on chrome://extensions/shortcuts. Another extension may have taken it |
| The popup says “Error loading page info” | Reload the page and try again. Some browser pages cannot be read |
| Saves fail with a key error | Check the key in Settings > Device keys has not been revoked. Make a new one if needed |
| The extension disappeared after you moved the ZIP folder | Load it again with Load unpacked, pointing at the folder’s new place |
