AI search

AI search answers questions about what you have saved. Type a question in plain English, such as “what did I save about pricing pages?”, and Ultrathink writes a short answer and lists the entries it used.

AI search is part of the Pro plan. On the Free plan, the search bar shows a PRO label, and asking a question opens an upgrade page instead.

Ask a question

  1. Click the search bar at the top of any page, or press Ctrl K (Cmd K on a Mac).
  2. Type your question. It needs at least 3 characters.
  3. Press Enter.

The Search page opens with your question at the top. While AI search works, it shows what it is doing. Then you see:

  • The answer: a short reply written from your entries.
  • The entries it used: each with its title and a short preview. Click one to open it in the detail panel.

You can also open Search from the sidebar. Before you ask anything, the page offers a few example questions to try, such as “recent meetings” or “articles I saved”. Click one to ask it.

Typing without pressing Enter

Typing in the search bar filters the page you are on as you go. That is a quick filter, not AI search. AI search only runs when you press Enter. See Search and filters.

Topics and people

If your search starts with # (a topic) or @ (a person), pressing Enter filters by that topic or person instead of asking AI search.

What AI search reads

AI search reads your newest entries, up to your entry limit, and answers from those. For each entry it reads the title, entity, topics and the start of your notes or content.

  • Entry limit: 500 entries by default. Change it in Settings > AI search > Entry limit, anywhere from 50 to 5000.
  • Older entries: entries beyond the limit are not read. Raise the limit if you often ask about older things.
  • Shared entries: if you belong to an organisation, AI search also reads entries your colleagues have shared with it, up to 40% of your entry limit on top.

A higher limit lets AI search see further back. It can also make answers a little slower.

Search by meaning, which searches your whole history, is an experiment and is not available to everyone yet.

When nothing is found

If AI search finds no entries about your question, the Search page says so and suggests trying other words. It also offers to capture something about it now: click Capture something, or press N if you have hidden the add buttons.

When a search fails

If a search does not finish, the Search page says so and shows a Retry button. Click it to ask the same question again.

The search prompt

AI search works from a prompt you can edit in Settings > AI search > Search prompt. Your version replaces the default, and a Customised label appears. Click Reset to go back to the default.

Most people never need to change it. Raising or lowering the entry limit makes more difference.

Writing good questions

Ask the way you would ask a colleague:

Instead ofTry
pricingWhat have I saved about pricing pages?
JohnWhat did John recommend for the launch?
deadlinesWhich projects have deadlines coming up?
reactWhat did I learn about React performance?

Tips:

  • Be specific. Name the project, the person or the thing.
  • Ask one thing at a time. Two questions in one get a vaguer answer.
  • Use your own words. AI search reads your topics and notes, so the words you use when you capture help it find things.
  • Add notes when you capture. A line of notes on an entry makes it much easier to find later.

Why an answer might miss something

  • The entry is older than your limit. Raise the entry limit in Settings > AI search.
  • The entry is still being processed. A brand new entry may not have its topics yet. Wait for the AI pass to finish.
  • The entry has little text. A link or a screenshot with no notes gives AI search less to go on.
